78th INTERNATIONAL INFERNO RACES 2021 CANCELLED

Press release -

78th INTERNATIONAL INFERNO RACES 2021 CANCELLED

The International Inferno Races from 20th – 23rd January 2021 have been cancelled. The restrictions for major events that have been put in place by the authorities due to Covid-19 means the races cannot be held. A postponement is not planned. The entry fees will be 100 percent refunded.

What has become apparent in the last few weeks is now a certainty: Due to Covid-19 and the associated restrictions for major events, the 78th International Inferno Races from 20th - 23rd January 2021 cannot be held. The organising committee (OC) took the final decision at an extraordinary meeting on Friday 4th December 2020. "The inferno races could not be held in 1964 and 1990 due to a lack of snow", said Christoph Egger, OC President of the Inferno races, "Now we are being stopped by a pandemic for the first time. We very much regret this decision".

Postponement considered

Postponement of the races until the end of March or the beginning of April 2021 was intensively discussed. However, it is too uncertain whether events on the scale of the Inferno Races will be possible again by then. In addition, it had to be taken into account that several long sections of the downhill run could be endangered by wet snow avalanches in the warmer spring months and would force the races to be stopped from midday onwards. Also the organisation of the combined cross-country skiing on the village streets in Mürren would be questionable in the spring.

Entry fees - fully refunded

As the OC has already announced in an earlier notification, the entry fees already paid will be fully refunded. The 78th International Inferno Races will take place from 19th to 22nd January 2022. Online registration will be open from June 2021.
